Think about the future....(finally starting my novel)
So, Im seriously thinking about writing a book...again, something ive always wanted to do. I spoke to one of my customers and she mentioned a publishing company that bought her book and didnt charge her in the thousands to get the book out... I have two ideas. One, a semi boigraphy on my career in retail...aka Clerks type story. Ive certainly got alot of stories from my 19 going on 20 years. Of course Id have to change all the names and places so as not to offend anyone lol... My second idea and my most intriguing to me is to write the next big thing in syfy/fantasy ... There is no more Star Wars, no more Lord of the Rings. (well except for a cartoon and maybe the Hobbit.... these two greats can continue forever) Its a lofty goal yes and im sure its a snowballs chance in a volcano but the world needs a new great syfy/fantasy trilogy story... and why not me? The issue here is keeping it fresh and new... Not going back to things Ive seen before... Its going to be tough but I think Ive got the beginnings of the main character and then I go from there... My plan and hope is to have the book out by next year... With any luck I can get it published as well.. 2011 is the year for me to move ahead with my dreams (refer back to my first post) Not sure what exactly inspired me but im glad it did.. So let me hear some opinions.. what would you rather read? I know its a tough question because everyone enjoys different things but between the above two i mentioned which would you prefer??

I'd personally go for the retail memoir, its easier to write what you know and keep it honest, readers relate to that more. Also, very few books I've ever read on the subject and trust me, I read A LOT. Also, best advice my advanced comp teacher ever gave me: Writers write, so write every day even if it isn't part of your main project. A lot of writers I know write at least 750 words a day just free writing to get ideas and thoughts on paper, then they do whatever "work" writing they need to do to stay on goal for their writing deadlines. I have been working on a few projects for a couple years now, and I have to say it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Feel free to email or Facebook message if you want to chat about writing, bounce around ideas, or just plain vent frustration. Good luck man, I think your plan to write a novel is a fantastic idea.

Joe that's great. I would definitely side on the retail career. Managing bookstores for over 5 years I can tell you that there are just a small amount of these types of books that are published. The ones that have been published flew off the shelves because people were so interested in the stories. Each story was published in it's own chapter, and they worked well. One publishing company that we used to work with is called Iuniverse. It's a self publishing company where if you are not getting far with other publishing companies you are able to have them publish your book. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOnly thing im not sure of if I go with the retail stories is can I use the real people and places that I worked in without needing permission? Or do I have to change the names and stuff like that? Thanks for the posts!! Great Insight!
ReplyDeleteBoth ideas could be interesting. The retail story could work, but I'm not sure how well it translates into a successful story that has character growth. It would have to use some experience influences, but you would even have to modify the character to try and build towards something.
ReplyDeleteThe next LOTR or Star Wars would be even harder to build on. It feels like all the mythology has been already been used up and the well is dry, but with some outside the box thinking, you can create something. We did character creation and mythology in school for these types of things. And it's about creating or following a certain archetype and ideology. It would take a lot of flushin out of the who, what, when, where, and why right before you actually start to write.
I'd recommend devoting a certain block of time every night to your project. So from 8-9pm I would work on it, or your goal may become stale. Good luck.
Thanks for the post Wayne.. to your point I plan on devoting the time to the project...youre absolutely right that you need to work on it every day...
ReplyDeleteI think you should do the retail book. Plus I am giving you permission to use my name in the book. Hopefully I get a spot in that book somewhere. Whether it be the time we were imitating Hacksaw Jim Duggan and yelled hooooooo!!! and all the large girls looked at us and smiled thinking we were talking to them, or the time someones husband came in the back room and pulled a gun on me, or the time where I had some sexual encounter with every female employee at Radio Shack, I should make a paragraph or two in this book. By all means you may use my character likeness. --KG--
ReplyDeleteYou my friend would most likely get a chapter... Definitely during the Shack years...Lol
